Brief Introduction to the world of Runes

If you are new to the world of Runes here are some basics that apply to the majority of Runes from Elder Futhark to Witches.
Keep in mind that there are many different versions and ways of using Runes and what I share here is which ones I use, how I use them and is only my view. As with anything you read or see online, you should always do your own research and critical analysis to see how (or if) they would fit into your individual practices.

What are Runes?
Runes were used by many different peoples across the centuries with the best know being the Viking Runes. They are commonly used for divination and were usually marked, etched, or painted onto stone, bone, or wood. Each Rune marking or symbol can be part of an alphabet but also have meanings when used in divination.
Runes were not used for writing as we use our alphabet but were used on large stones (monoliths) to mark an event or honor a warrior for example.
Runes have been found in many places Vikings landed or invaded, from Iceland to America. Many of the places influenced by the Vikings developed their own runes which differed slightly in symbols and names, but the meanings remained very similar. While others developed a more pictorial type of Rune. The use of the Runes for divination is the common thread.
The word Rune derived from the German word Ru – meaning to remain hidden, held in mystery or kept secret.

Runes, caring for them.
First things first, you will of course need a set of Runes. The more well-known versions of Runes are widely available in many materials however, if cost is a factor, you are not able to find the version you want or you would prefer it, you can create your own set to use.
Caring for your Runes is much like you would care for anything you value and should be done whichever type of Runes you choose to use.
  • Protect them from outside energies and keep them clean by keeping them in a cloth pouch, bag, or lined box.
  • You will need to cleanse your runes from time to time. Especially when you first get your own set, it is best to cleanse them of any previous energy they may have. If your Runes are exposed to negative energy in a reading, or if exposed to many different people’s energy, would be another time to cleanse. The most common ways of cleansing are in a full moon or smudging although you can use the method that feels most natural to you.
  • Your Runes will also need to be charged. Between readings and if you feel like they are lacking the energy they usually have. This can be done is similar ways to crystals, but I suggest you explore and find the best way for you. I use Witches Runes and keep mine with me after cleansing. I talk to them to put my energy in the Runes. Sounds odd but it works for me.

Common Rune Divination Use.
As with anything you will learn what works best for you as you begin using your chosen Runes, but I will cover the most common ways of use here.
  • Pick form the bag.
    • Close your eyes, concentrate on your question, and then choose a rune or more from the pouch.
  • Toss them.
    • Focus on your question then gently empty the runes on to a soft, safe surface. Use the runes that are face up to answer your question.
  • Use a Spread
    • There are many rune spreads that are available online and you would use them in the same manner as a tarot spread.
Do some exploring and find what works best for you!
We carry several different styles of Runes and you can find them in our online store.
