Witches Runes – What are they and how do you use them?

When you hear of Runes most people think of the Elder Futhark Runes used by the Vikings (among others) but have you heard of Witches Runes?
I have made and used Witches Runes for a while and have taken a closer look at what they are and where they originated. I wanted to share what I have learnt and how I use them, sometimes on their own and sometimes along side Tarot.
Keep in mind that there are many different versions and ways of using Witches Runes and what I share here is which ones I use, how I use them and is only my view. As with anything you read or see online, you should always do your own research and critical analysis to see how (or if) they would fit into your individual practices.

Let’s start with a few basics.
The word Rune derived from the German word Ru – meaning to remain hidden, held in mystery or kept secret.
There are 13 Witches Runes, this is most likely to be connected to the traditional coven size of 13, which is probably connected to why 13 is considered an unlucky number by some.
Some of the symbols (pictograms) on the Runes can be traced to Europe, the East and Africa. Many designs can also be linked to the Picts, a Scottish tribe whose origin is also cloaked in mystery, but I don’t believe anyone can be sure of the origin of the Witches Runes.
The simple pictograms on Witches Runes and the lesser number of them make them easier to read than the more well know Elder Futhark Runes.
For me this has always been enough history or background I need but if you want more the internet is your most valuable resource. While you will find many books on Nordic Runes there are only a limited number of books that go into any depth on the Witches variety I have found.
So…..how do you work with Witches Runes?
Well, that is up to you! I use them similarly to Tarot and Oracle cards or along side them if I need to have more insight.
Keep them safe and clean in their own bag, I pull directly from the bag and usually take one to go with each card I pull to give more depth and context. You can also use only the Runes, draw 3 for Mind, Body, Spirit or Past, Present, Future.
Witches Runes can be used in different ways, such as casting them on a cloth or a board, drawing them from a bag, or laying them out in a spread. Witches’ runes can help you gain insight into situations, make decisions, or perform magic.
As with any tool you use be sure to cleanse and charge your runes when you feel the need it and when you first get your own set. For more information on cleansing and charging see our blog post
